Message from Our CEO
'Together, en masse, let's pick up these bedraggled, harried, limpid men and dust them off, praise them and lift them up with our arms horrent. Together we can raise men up, one man at a time, every time'
- Micky Honnecker, CEO Uncle Ireland
Through times past, society has tended to consider men as simple and aimless bipedal lunking hunks of souring meat. Not any more; we’re beginning to see that underneath that under the hood there’s a person there, a living, breathing person, now known as [a] man. And as we know, they come in all shapes and sizes – big/husky, small or somewhere inbetween, high IQ or just that bit slow, athletic or studious, eloquent or monosyllabic, rugged or smooth, rude or laid-back. Yes -men aren’t one-dimensional; scientists are beginning to discover that they indeed contain multitudes. There’s no ghost in the machine. Not when we go in hard.
But as we all know, men are struggling in many aspects of modern life; navigating the modern workplace or supermarket, talking to girls and women, talking to each other, talking in general, basically communicating. They just can’t seem to do it. When was the last time you saw a man walk on the grass or look at the backs of their hands in wonder? How many times do they clean that same window? Why do they seldom frequent public parks in the sunshine or when the weather is inclement? And when did you last see a man give a dog a full and meaningful hug? And queuing at the bakery or butchers? Not a chance. Yes. Men are in trouble. Deep big trouble.
And that’s where Uncle comes in. Over the last 100+ years we have offered support, shelter, encouragement and empathetic tough love to our men who need it most. From our humble beginnings in Castlerea, we have grown our footprint and are now a presence in 142 countries with our teams speaking a total of 142 languages. We have established Uncle offices from Brazil to Angola, Argentina to Oman, from the Arctic to the very bottom tip of Chile to the Isle of Man to almost every island in the Solomon Islands. Thanks to our brave colleagues in Uncles Sans Frontieres, we even have a strong presence in seven-ninths of the world’s most disputed territories. We are everywhere, doing all we can, doing what we do. Why? Because we have to.
Our motto has always been ‘No Man Left Behind’ and we live and breathe this motto, amongst others. It’s our line in the sand. It’s our red line. It’s our flag in the ground, our Rubicon which we cross forward and back each and every minute of each and every day, burning and rebuilding our bridges at each turn. The die is cast and we have willingly and meaningfully thrown it. Fait accompli. Men are in their eleventh hour, a few seconds to midnight on that foreboding nuclear male clock. Let the bells not toll for them. Let’s silence the bells, gently, and bring everyone back to their own centre. One at a time. Let’s bring our men back to shore.
As a global nation under all countries, we need to steer away from empathy and focus on bringing back righteous pity – you can help us do this. Be a part of something big, huge, drastically important. Do your part – they’ll thank you for it. Eventually.
Help us. Help us help them. Help us help them help themselves help others.
Help.
So, do you see what we see? If so, congratulations - you’re already a part of the solution.
Contact us on the usual channels. Today.
Let’s raise them up, one man at a time, every time.
Because your actions today are their futures tomorrow.
Best wishes to you all,
